The Evil Eye: Protecting Your Energy Through Self-Awareness and Personal Power

We’ve all heard about the evil eye, usually alongside a list of things we should buy, wear, or carry to protect ourselves.

But my perspective on psychic protection starts with something much more personal: how much authority are you giving other people over the way you feel about yourself?

Because you can wear all the protective jewelry you want and still let one person’s opinion run your entire afternoon.

Let’s talk about that.

What Is the Evil Eye?

The evil eye is a spiritual belief that envy or ill will, sometimes expressed through a look, can bring misfortune to another person. The familiar eye-shaped amulet is used as a symbol of protection against it.

In my own practice, I also explore the evil eye through the lens of projection: what happens when someone’s insecurities, fears, or limiting beliefs get directed toward another person.

Someone sees you expressing a confidence they struggle to access. Maybe you’re pursuing something they’ve convinced themselves is impossible. Instead of examining what your choices bring up within them, they criticize, dismiss, or discourage you.

That doesn’t mean every disagreement is jealousy or every sideways glance is spiritually significant. But it does raise a useful question: Am I receiving something constructive, or am I being asked to carry someone else’s discomfort?

When Someone Else’s Limitations Become Yours

Imagine sharing a goal you’re excited about, only to hear:

“That’s unrealistic.”

“You really think you can do that?”

“I wouldn’t get my hopes up.”

Sometimes people are identifying a practical concern worth considering. Other times, they’re speaking from the boundaries of their own experience and assuming those boundaries apply to you.

The problem begins when you automatically treat their perspective as more credible than your own.

Before the conversation, you felt capable. Afterward, you’re questioning whether you should even try. Nothing about your actual circumstances changed, but someone else’s interpretation has become the loudest voice in the room.

This is the dynamic I’m interested in when I talk about protecting your energy. Recognizing someone else’s perspective gives you a choice about how much influence it gets.

Know Your Baseline

Self-awareness is central to my approach to psychic work.

How do you normally feel when you’re rested, comfortable, and connected to yourself? What helps you concentrate? Which situations leave you overwhelmed? What happens to your confidence when you spend too much time comparing yourself to others?

Knowing your baseline helps you notice changes without immediately inventing an explanation for them.

Feeling tired, distracted, or unmotivated doesn’t establish that someone has sent you negative energy. Those feelings can have plenty of ordinary causes. Start by checking what you need and what has actually happened.

Maybe you need sleep. Maybe you’re overstimulated. Maybe a conversation bothered you more than you initially admitted.

Understanding your experience gives you something useful to respond to.

Be Selective About What You Share

You are allowed to have a private life. You are also allowed to let an idea develop before inviting everyone you know to comment on it.

Some goals need room to become sturdy. If every new ambition immediately enters a public discussion, you may spend more time defending it than developing it.

I’ve found that keeping certain plans to myself helps me stay connected to why I wanted them in the first place.

That doesn’t require assuming people wish you harm. It means recognizing that access to your inner world can be intentional.

Share with people who can offer perspective, encouragement, and honest feedback without making you feel as though you need permission to want what you want.

Your next chapter does not need a committee.

Clean Your Space and Give Yourself a Reset

One of my favorite forms of energetic care is also extremely ordinary: cleaning.

Vacuuming, changing the sheets, putting things away, or clearing a crowded surface can help me feel settled in my space again. There is something powerful about noticing what needs attention and tending to it.

In my spiritual practice, I approach those actions as cleansing rituals. A shower can serve a similar purpose: a moment to decompress, reconnect with my body, and imagine releasing the tension of the day.

These practices don’t need to become elaborate—or something you feel compelled to do because you went outside. Their value is in helping you feel present and cared for.

Sometimes tending to your energy looks like a quiet ritual. Sometimes it looks like finally dealing with the pile on your bedroom chair.

Both count.

Set Boundaries Where You Notice a Pattern

If you consistently leave interactions with someone feeling belittled, pressured, or unable to express yourself, pay attention to the behavior involved.

Do they make jokes at your expense? Dismiss your decisions? Keep pushing after you’ve said no?

You don’t need to determine their hidden motives before setting a boundary.

You can limit a topic, end a conversation, share less, or change how much time you spend together. You can also disagree without taking on the responsibility of convincing them.

Being affected by someone’s behavior doesn’t mean you’re weak or spiritually unprotected. Boundaries are a practice, and sometimes we recognize the need for them after we’ve already become uncomfortable.

You can start from there.

The Astrological Lens: Pluto and Personal Power

In astrology, I connect these themes with Pluto because of its symbolism around power, control, vulnerability, and transformation.

I use Pluto’s house placement as a starting point for exploring where those dynamics might become especially meaningful. Fourth-house themes can bring attention to family patterns; sixth-house themes can invite reflection on work and daily responsibilities; third-house themes can involve communication and familiar social environments.

These placements are symbolic prompts. They don’t identify who is jealous of you or establish that anyone is directing harmful energy your way.

The question I find most productive is: Where am I learning to recognize my own authority, and how do I respond when it feels challenged?

I also find the Taurus–Scorpio axis useful here. Symbolically, it invites us to consider how a stable sense of value can support us through experiences that stir up fear, comparison, or a need for control.

And What If You’re the One Feeling Envious?

We also have to be willing to catch ourselves.

Sometimes another person’s confidence irritates us because we want more freedom to express our own. Their success might touch an ambition we’ve neglected. Their visibility might bring up our fear of being seen.

That feeling is worth examining before turning it into a judgment about them.

Ask yourself: What do I think they’re allowed to have that I’m not?

The answer can reveal something you want to develop. Envy becomes more useful when you let it point toward a desire you can take responsibility for.

Someone else having something you want doesn’t automatically make it less available to you.

Protect What You Value

For me, psychic protection begins with treating my attention, time, and self-respect as things worth caring for.

That means knowing when to listen, when to question an opinion, when to rest, and when to say, “I see this differently.”

You can use spiritual symbols and rituals as meaningful reminders of that practice. The everyday decisions matter, too.

Other people will have opinions about your life. You still get to decide how you live it.
